September is always a busy month for all cosmetic houses and beauty websites—there are spoilers for Christmas coffrets and advent calendars, and it’s the season of new launches and limited edition colors to coincide with fashion week in Paris, London, Milan, and New York. As there are just too many offers and deals to list, I have hand picked a few that in my opinion represent good value. Beauty boxes have a lot to live up to as each compete with gifts, referral schemes, and loyalty programs. My advice is to keep the subscriptions short to give yourself the option to cancel, because even if you are saving 20% that may only be a pound a box, and if you get more than one box with items that you won’t use than that negates the savings.
I tend not to buy too much and wait for Black Friday offers (24 November 2017) and see what specials come up. Don’t forget to sign up for newsletters as many companies start a week before Black Friday with daily offers!
The September You Beauty Box will be the last one as it finally joins forces with their sister company Latest in Beauty. You Beauty Box recently updated its service and offered a bronze, gold, and platinum subscription, however Latest in Beauty offers a little more flexibility in that you don’t have to wait until the 1st of each month to choose items. There are a few things that I feel people will miss though, and it remains to be seen if Latest in Beauty will adapt these into their subscription.
I liked the fact you could cancel at anytime and that an email reminder was sent to allow you to cancel or continue. Currently Latest in Beauty doesn’t offer this, as you can only cancel 7 days before your subscription is due to renew and you don’t get a reminder. The price point of under £10 including postage was good as a small treat of items that you could choose, and while Latest in Beauty offers 3 items for £9 that is only with a subscription that you must remember to cancel.
This is Powder has also launched a subscription service (you get to see what is in each months box) alongside their seasonal curated collections. A rolling monthly subscription costs £15, 6 months costs £13.50 per box, and 12 months is £10 per box (all include postage). The subscription box contains around 8 items, and comes packaged in a handy pink drawer box. The seasonal box can be ordered as a one off, and contains a mixture of full sized and sample sized items for £35, and comes in a larger pink drawer box which is very handy.
*Look out for the limited edition NARS box out on 13 September priced at £40 for seven items including a multiple stick and orgasm blusher. https://www.thisispowder.co.uk/content/limited-edition-nars
Clarins have been redeveloping several of their products and the latest is Double Serum that contains 21 natural plant extracts. They have also introduced a new range of SOS face masks; hydra for dehydrated skin, pure for oily and combination skin, and comfort for sensitive and dry skin. Priced at £30 for 75 ml, these offer intensive treatments in the comfort of your own home. Buy a Double Serum before 17th September and receive a two generous travel sized products of your choice that includes:
• One step Gentle Exfoliating Cleanser 30 ml
• Super Restorative Day Cream All Skin 15 ml/or Extra Firming Day All Skin 15 ml/or Multi Active All Skin 15 ml
I personally like the Super Restorative Day Cream as it is rich without being heavy and works wonders on a dehydrated skin.
Nuxe have updated their popular Crème Fraîche range with a new look and advanced hydration. The range consists of a serum, cream for dry skin in a jar or a tube, cream for normal skin in a jar or a tube, a moisturizing fluid and a moisturizing mask. Look out for it as stores are changing their stock over to the new range.
Latest in Beauty have recently released a curated box that contains some award winning high end brands in conjunction with Harper’s Bazaar, with several that full sized items. Priced at £100 it, the box is more of an investment, but does offer good value as long as you can use all the items or at least half of them and maybe regift the others. Brands include: Elemis, Eve Lom, Nuxe, Foreo, Neal’s Yard, NARS, Dr. Sebagh,M.A.C., Smashbox, This Works, Bumble and Bumble, Sisley, and Dr. Dennis Gross.

Skincare specialists, Espa have been bought out by The Hut (the owners of Look Fantastic), which combined with the Lauder Group acquisition of Deciem shows what a tough market the cosmetics industry has become. What is worrying is that some companies will have a monopoly, which can go either way. It means smaller companies have enhanced distribution and research facilities, but also this can lead to the gray or black markets where products can be sold on, and brands can lose their reputations.
