The August Birchbox has no less than 10 beautifully designed drawer boxes this month as it joins forces with 10 Etsy designers. Unfortunately you don’t get to choose which design, but all are stunningly creative, and the drawer boxes are invaluable. I received a lovely flowery one from @lucysaysido, plus inside this month there are two full sized products too!
Birchbox is a monthly beauty subscription box (£10 each month, plus £2.95 postage) or there are 6 month (free delivery for the first box) and 12 month options (one free box) for some additional discounts. All subscribers get 10% the featured items that month if you want to buy the full sized items, and for those who have subscribed for 6 months or more in a row, the discount is 15% as a Birchbox VIP. Boxes usually arrive by courier or there is now an option to use click and collect, which is sometimes much easier.
Each box contains at least 5 (sometime more) beauty products that can be sample, travel, or full sized that are matched to an online profile that you fill out when you sign up. Sometimes it works, and other times it doesn’t depending on what products are available that month. This month, I am happy to say all the products are useful, and it’s a good balanced selection!
Rating and verdict
Each month there are a variety of products that are available resulting in several versions of the monthly box, because Birchbox has a policy of not sending you the same item twice. This month my box included the following items:
- *Dr. Botanicals Pomegranate Superfood Regenerating Sleeping Mask ~ Full size @£14.90.
- *Dirty Little Secret Eye Shadow Crayon in Gold Plated or Fetch ~ Full size @£10.50
- philosophy purity 3 in 1 cleanser ~ Deluxe sample size @£3 (approx)
- Rituals Happy Buddha Foaming Shower Gel ~ Travel size @ £4.50
- CLĒ Cosmetics Melting Lip Powder ~ Deluxe sample size in Red Cherry
* Products all subscribers receive.
I already use purity by philosophy and it’s a fabulous cleanser; if you’ve not tried this hero product, it foams up with warm water and gently cleanses the face. I was actually excited about the refillable bottle in a 30 ml size, which is excellent for trips away, especially when you need to travel light. Rituals have a wonderfully luxurious range for the body, with subtle fragrances that create an aura of calm. I’ve used their foaming shower gels before, so a new fragrance to try is always a a welcome item in a beauty box.
The full sized Dirty Little Secret crayon I received was in Fetch which is a subtle rose gold shade which is ideal as a highlighter for me. The CLĒ melting lip powder actually doubles up a a cheek tint which I was quite happy about. I love products that have dual functions especially when I am traveling very light. Pink isn’t my shade for lips, but for cheeks I quite like it. The finish is matte, but you can equally create your own look with shimmer powders or highlighters.
The other full sized product is Dr. Botanicals Pomegranate Superfood Regenerating Sleeping Mask which is a lovely face mask for all skin types. It’s quite concentrated so you don’t need much, but it does leave a dry finish on the skin so apply this after your normal toner, serum and moisturizer at night. It’s not too stimulating, so you can probably use this a couple of times a week, and is ideal if you don’t have time for face masks or a sheet mask.
The August Birchbox is an excellent buy, and currently you can get your first box for £5 (plus £2.95 postage) with the code AUGUST until 31 August or while stocks last. It’s an ideal time to try Birchbox if you’ve not already done so, and the sleep mask alone costs more than the box. Sign up here, and you’ll get your box in about 7-10 days.
