Birchbox started the month with a selection of mystery offers when you subscribed and I went for the 3 for 1 box offer, which is even more of a lucky dip than usual. This month, each subscriber can choose a deluxe travel sized Benefit blush in either Gold Rush (a honey shade) or Galifornia (pinky shade), which is handy when you are on the go. Birchbox is a monthly subscription beauty box priced at £10 plus £2.95 postage where you receive a selection of at least five beauty items that can be sample, travel, or full sized. This month they were all sample or travel sized items, and the selection varies as the products are matched to your profile and also whether or not you have received the same item before.
Rating and verdict
The contents of the September box weren’t particularly inspiring and the box itself was a handy drawer box, but nothing spectacular compared to previous months. Here is what I got in my box this month;
- Benefit travel sized Gold Rush Blusher ~ @£8 approx.
- Caudalie Vinopure Clear Skin Purifying Toner ~ Travel size/50 ml @£4.50
- Marcelle City Anti-Pollution Day and and Night Moisturizing Emulsion ~ Sample 7 ml tube @£4 approx.
- Beauty Protector Protect and Volume Spray ~ Travel size about 30ml @£3 approx.
- Eyeko Water Resistant Brow Liner ~ Deluxe size 1.2g @£8 approx.
As you can see my box was a strange mixture of items and based on retail prices was worth about £28, which compared to other boxes isn’t as good value. The Benefit Gold Rush blusher is lovely and the perfect shade for me, and I like smaller sizes so I can experiment with other brands. I was surprised at the Caudalie Vinopure Clear Skin Clarifying Toner, that was really pleasant to use and didn’t sting or dry out the skin. It is aimed at combination and oily skin, and as I am combination with only a slight t-zone the toner felt refreshing, but is probably best used during spring and summer as for normal skin it would feel too drying.
The Marcelle moisturizer felt wonderfully smooth and soft on the skin, however, as I have so many products to use up and try it’s not something I would purchase. The Beauty Protector spray is not something I would use and I have had it before and smells rather sickly. The final item is an Eyeko Brow Liner, which is a product I hadn’t thought of using as I have very fine brows, but the applicator is soft and the shade is very subtle.
The selection isn’t bad as I will use three of the products, but they aren’t all products that I have been eager or looking to try. I ordered the box mainly for the blusher, and the toner is a handy travel sized bottle which I will probably save for travelling, and the same for the Marcelle moisturizer which is enough for a weekend away. In all, fairly useful products, but not a particularly month.
You can subscribe to Birchbox here, and currently they have a 2 for 1 offer with the code COUPLE. On 28th September, Birchbox will have their annual Customer Appreciation Day which usually has special offers and discounts, so look out for it.
