Finding a value for money cleanser that doesn’t leave your skin feeling tight, and that lasts more than a few weeks is no easy task. I’ve rounded up a selection of cleansers that not only work and leave the skin mositurized, but also last at least a couple of months, used twice a day. A good quality cleanser will be concentrated, and if there is no pump dispenser the general rule is to use no more than the size of a twenty pence coin or a nickel sized amount. It won’t do any harm to use more, but it’ll be sadly wasted. Some cleansers also remove makeup; if they do, a quick double cleanse is advised to ensure you remove any residue. Let me know what you think, and if you discover any new ones to add to the list.
Nip + Fab Glycolic Cleansing Fix (150 ml/5.1 oz @£7.97/$7.95) ~ This is a great value cleanser that foams easily with the fresh aroma of apples. It does contain 2% glycolic acid (which is a fruit acid) so may not be suitable for sensitive skin and should not be used on broken or irritated skin. The added olive oil helps with hydration, and is concentrated so only a small amount is needed. As with any glycolic products, always use a sunscreen as the fruit acids loosens the natural facial barrier (acid mantle) that protects the skin.
The Sanctuary Moisture Burst Facial Wash (100 ml @£8.00) ~ Suitable for all skin types, this contains jojoba and almond oil, which gives this cleanser wonderful moisturizing properties. Available in a handy sized tube, it’s easy to carry around for traveling and to take to the gym.
Soap and Glory 3-in-1 Daily Vitamin C Facial Wash (350 ml @£8.00) ~ A bumper sized product that contains an exclusive SUPERFRUIT™ YUZU complex. The foam gently exfoliates and smooths the skin, and 350 ml will last at least a few months.
Mario Badescu Cream Soap (177 ml/6 oz @ £10.25/$12.00) ~ A classic cleanser and an old favorite of mine. This is calming and gentle, and is suitable for all skin types, especially those with sensitive skin. A little goes a long way here and leaves the skin soft and smooth instantly.
Caudalie Gentle Cleansing Milk (100 ml @£9.00) ~ A cleanser that can be wiped off or rinsed off depending on how you feel. This is wonderful for people who don’t like to use water, or who have sensitive skin. Among the ingredients are sweet almond oil, extracts of sunflower and oat, and their legendary anti-aging grape seed oil.
Cetaphil (236 ml/8 oz @£8.99/$6.49) ~ A skincare classic suitable for all skin types and can be rinsed off with or without water. Fragrance free, and soap free, the cleanser comes in a variety of sizes and the larger sizes have a useful pump dispenser. This can also be used over the body, so is great for traveling and taking only one product.
Avène Cold Cream Ultra Rich Cleansing Gel (200 ml @£8.00) ~ A cleanser best suited for dry or sensitive skin that is soap free and leaves the skin nourished and hydrated. It contains their Avène Thermal Spring Water for a pure cleansing experience.
philosophy purity made simple 3-in-1 cleanser for face and eyes (90 ml/3 oz @£8.50/$11.00) ~ This is my best friend’s favorite cleanser, and she bulk buys the largest sizes possible (the larger sizes come in pump dispensers) so she will never run out. It’s suitable for sensitive skin (fragrance free), and is simple to use; massage on a slightly damp face and rinse off. It’s even gentle enough for the eye area and contains no parabens or sulfates. A much loved product that if you haven’t tried yet, do so.
Eucerin DermatoCLEAN Cleansing Gel (200 ml @£9.00) ~A mild cleansing gel for normal to combination skin, that also removes makeup. Eucerin is renowned for products that leave the skin hydrated especially for those who have dry and sensitive skin.
The Body Shop ® Vitamin E Cream Cleanser (250 ml/8.4 oz @£7.00/$17.00) ~ Soap free and suitable for all skin types and ages; this is a versatile cleanser that has been a consistent bestseller that cleanses and moisturizes. All the The Body Shop products are guaranteed to be 100% vegetarian, with no parabens, or mineral oils, and are ethically produced. Great value and can be used by all the family.
Of course there are many other cleansers to choose from, but these are the ones I have found to be good value and versatile. Don’t forget the skin can change from season to season, and having a cleanser that is suitable for all seasons is better for your bank balance as well as your skin. I find cleansing oils less pleasant to use during summer, and creams can feel too heavy in humid climates, so adapt as and when needed. Cleansing is the basis for healthy and younger looking skin, and is worth investing some time into finding what suits your skin and budget.
